  18. <p>     It was perhaps the greatest single-game offensive output in
  19. the history of baseball. Last week against the Cincinnati Reds,
  20. Mark Whiten of the St. Louis Cardinals hit four home runs and
  21. batted in 12, leading his team to a 15-2 victory. "Every time
  22. I hit it, I was like amazed," said the outfielder. Whiten, 25,
  23. whose batting average has been an unimpressive .246, is now
  24. in fabled company. Only 11 others--including Gil Hodges, Willie
  25. Mays and Lou Gehrig--have hit four homers in a game.
