- <p> It was perhaps the greatest single-game offensive output in
- the history of baseball. Last week against the Cincinnati Reds,
- Mark Whiten of the St. Louis Cardinals hit four home runs and
- batted in 12, leading his team to a 15-2 victory. "Every time
- I hit it, I was like amazed," said the outfielder. Whiten, 25,
- whose batting average has been an unimpressive .246, is now
- in fabled company. Only 11 others--including Gil Hodges, Willie
- Mays and Lou Gehrig--have hit four homers in a game.
